Business Central is a business management solution that businesses can use to oversee finances, operations, and processes – all from a single platform. Essentially, it’s an efficiency powerhouse that spans multiple teams, operations, and processes, including supply chain management.
For supply chain, Business Central boasts a comprehensive set of features that support every stage of business processes – from procurement and production through to distribution and logistics. This includes solutions for inventory management, order processing, demand forecasting, and regulatory compliance.
Finance employees can use Business Central to automate everyday tasks such as invoicing, budgeting, and reporting, and senior leaders can get real-time insights on business operations and data.
The ability to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and flexibly adapt to regulatory changes makes Business Central essential for organisations with complex supply chain requirements and logistics.
The latest Business Central updates announced for 2025 extend supply chain management capabilities even further. Adding new customisation options for businesses and users, plus new features for quality management and local subcontracting. Let’s take a look at what’s new:
New customisation options for fields, columns, documents, and pages
Businesses and users need specific information to complete their processes efficiently. Which is why, from October 2025, organisations will be able to tailor Business Central pages by adding fields or columns from a set list (or by customising existing fields further).
This change is, in fact, driven by community feedback and fulfils a common request for more control over displayed information. It ensures data is always relevant to the specific needs of each business.
Customisable fields and sections include:
- Statistics groups, including multiple posting groups and price calculation methods
- Sell-to customer name 2 and bill-to name 2 on project documents
- Buy-from vendor name 2 and pay-to name 2 on purchase documents
- Sell-to customer name 2 and bill-to name 2 on sales documents
- Shipping method, agent, and agent service code on service quotes
New default calculation configurations for Calculate Consumption report
Launching in October 2025, this feature lets businesses specify what they want the Calculate Consumption report to show (by default) on the Manufacturing Setup page. When viewing the report on the Consumption Journal page, employees simply choose the Calc. Consumption action to open the report.
From there, the “Calculate Based On” field will default to your selection in Manufacturing Setup. Best of all, this can be customised as needed. Ensuring the default consumption calculation matches the Manufacturing Setup saves time, makes the process more consistent, and eliminates the need for manual changes.
A new quality management extension
Coming in December 2025, this new feature will allow businesses to add custom steps and checks to their goods evaluation processes – specifically for incoming goods and materials. This will make complying with specific regulations or industry standards easier, while ensuring that products received meet quality standards consistently.
To achieve this, businesses define their processes, parameters, and reporting requirements in Business Central – then the platform does the rest!
The ability to sort lines by type & number in sales or purchase postings
Previously, Business Central processed sales and purchase document lines in the order of their line numbers. From October 2025, Dynamics will enable concurrent inventory posting by processing lines by type and number. If two sessions post at the same time, resources are locked in the same order to reduce the likelihood of deadlocks.
While the process for posting sales and purchase documents will remain unchanged, it’s worth noting that Microsoft has stated this update may affect extensions that rely on expected values in adjacent lines.
Brand new local subcontracting capabilities
Outsourcing parts of the production process can be a highly effective cost-saving strategy, especially for organisations with complex requirements needing specialised skills across multiple areas.
For example, a company may handle research, design, quality control, and sales in-house but outsource large parts of actual production – due to the high technology and skills investment required.
Business Central already supports subcontracting and third-party involvement for global businesses, but they’re taking this further. In December 2025, new features are being added for local (country-level) needs, including:
- Logistic flows that manage subcontractor transfers for raw materials and components, with warehouse handling and item tracking
- Flexible pricing that considers work centre, item, dates, and quantity
- Finished goods receipts with item tracking and warehouse handling from purchase orders
- Logistic flows for subcontractor transfers of finished goods
- Enhanced usability and more transparency in production processes
More changes are coming to Business Central beyond supply chain management this year, so watch this space for more updates. Plus, there have been updates announced for Dynamics 365 Customer Service, Dynamics 365 Sales, and Dynamics Contact Centre.
