What the Sales Order Agent does in Business Central

1 September 2026TD SYNNEX

Most sales teams still spend a surprising amount of time copying details out of emails and attachments into their ERP. The Sales Order Agent in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is designed to take on that work, so people can spend more time with customers and less time re-keying orders.

What the agent does

The agent monitors a mailbox you choose for incoming quote and order requests. When a request arrives, it reads the email and any attachment, identifies the customer, items and quantities, and creates a draft sales quote in Business Central. It can check item availability, and once the customer confirms, convert the quote into a sales order.

  • Reads quote requests from a connected mailbox
  • Matches customers and items to records already in Business Central
  • Creates draft sales quotes and checks stock availability
  • Prepares replies for the customer and converts accepted quotes into orders

Where people stay in control

The agent works through review steps rather than acting on its own without checks. Your team can see what it has done, approve or change drafts and step in when information is missing or a request is unusual. That keeps accountability with the people who own the customer relationship.

Who benefits most

Businesses that receive a steady flow of emailed orders, such as wholesalers, distributors and manufacturers, tend to see the clearest value. Fewer manual steps means quicker responses and fewer keying errors, which customers notice.

Getting ready

Clean customer and item data makes a big difference to how well the agent performs. Before switching it on, review item descriptions, customer records and the mailbox you plan to connect, and agree who will review the agent's work.

Microsoft releases agents in stages, and some capabilities start in preview before general availability. Features, regions, licensing and any consumption charges can change, so it's worth checking what's available in your own environment before planning a rollout. We can help you work out what applies to you.
